NFL MVP: Bills QB Josh Allen claims first award, surpasses Lamar Jackson

NEW ORLEANS — When the Buffalo Bills selected Josh Allen with the seventh pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, he was far from a guaranteed star. That’s why he wasn’t taken first overall or even in the top five.

Coming out of the University of Wyoming, Allen was an inconsistent passer who hadn’t dominated the Mountain West Conference. However, his exceptional arm strength and raw talent made him an intriguing prospect with sky-high potential. If he could refine his skills, he had the tools to become the best quarterback in the NFL.

Allen has exceeded every expectation. On Thursday night, he was named the league’s Most Valuable Player, edging out Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson to claim his first MVP award at the NFL Honors show. He becomes just the third player in Bills history to win the honor, joining Thurman Thomas (1991) and O.J. Simpson (1973).

"Feels good," Allen said backstage after accepting the award. "I think my teammates wanted this for me more than I did, but I'm honored."

Josh Allen delivered a remarkable season, solidifying his place among the NFL's elite. His MVP campaign gained momentum after a Week 14 showdown against the Los Angeles Rams, where he made history by becoming the first player in NFL regular-season history to record three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns in a single game. Despite the Bills falling short in a 44-42 loss, Allen's performance propelled him to the front of the MVP race.

While his overall numbers didn't surpass those of Lamar Jackson, voters seemed to prioritize his ability to elevate his team. A key argument in Allen's favor was that Jackson had a stronger supporting cast. Voter fatigue may have also played a role, as Jackson had already won two MVPs, whereas Allen had yet to claim one. Interestingly, the same voting panel that awarded Allen the MVP still named Jackson as the NFL's best quarterback on the All-Pro team.

Like Jackson, Allen's ultimate legacy hinges on leading the Bills to a Super Bowl. With Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs maintaining their dynasty, that challenge remains formidable. However, Allen's greatness is undeniable—his blend of elite arm strength and dynamic rushing ability makes him one of the league’s premier dual-threat quarterbacks. After years of carrying Buffalo’s offense, Allen now has an MVP award to validate his impact.
